Apple revamps Apple TV firmware, iOS Remote app to play nicely in an iTunes 11 world

Apple revamps Apple TV firmware, iOS Remote app to play nicely in an iTunes 11 world

If you're the early adopting type living in an Apple ecosystem, you probably upgraded to iTunes 11 almost as soon as the bits reached the servers. You might not have noticed that Apple gave its iOS Remote app and Apple TV firmware shots in the arm to match. Of the two, Remote 3.0 is the larger update and brings a simpler UI that also takes advantage of iTunes' new Up Next feature to add or prune out songs in ongoing playlists on a host computer. iPad owners reap the most rewards -- the album view now expands in place to quickly drill down to a specific track. Apple TV viewers aren't quite so coddled, although they too get Up Next support for iTunes 11 (and iTunes Match) as well as the usual rounds of speed-ups and bug fixes; we imagine a solution to some of the troubles with 5.1 is part of the package. No matter which update fits into your vision of musical harmony, you'll find details at the source links.

PostNet CEO Steve Greenbaum Gets Inside Look at Franchise ...

New Episode of Emmy Award-Winning CBS Reality Series to be Broadcast Friday, Dec. 7

DENVER, Nov. 29, 2012 // PRNewswire // - Since founding PostNet in 1993, CEO Steve Greenbaum has worked tirelessly to evolve the franchise from its origins as a mail and parcel store to a full-on Neighborhood Business Center, providing small business owners with relevant services and supporting economic growth in communities across the country. His journey to get a behind-the-scenes look at how that evolution is playing out in the PostNet franchise centers will unfold on the hit CBS series "Undercover Boss," airing on the CBS Television Network on Friday, Dec. 7 (8 pm/7c).

"Going undercover gave me an unprecedented opportunity to get a sense of how the decisions we've made at the executive level have affected our franchise owners, employees and customers," Greenbaum said. "I came away with an incredible sense of pride in our company and a renewed appreciation for those on the front lines of our business every day. It was an exhilarating and humbling experience, both personally and professionally."

With more than 700 locations worldwide, PostNet has carved a niche as the nation's first and only Neighborhood Business Center. Greenbaum, along with co-founder Brian Spindel, built the PostNet franchise system from the ground up and have remained intimately involved in all aspects of the company's operations. The two longtime friends and business partners spearheaded the evolved franchise model, which involved in-depth training of hundreds of PostNet franchise owners to meet the unique needs of start-ups and growing businesses, such as multi-channel marketing campaigns and web design.

On the episode, Greenbaum, disguised as a longhaired, former motorcycle shop owner named "Brad," worked in PostNet centers around the country in a variety of tasks, ranging from designing marketing collateral to outside sales and marketing of PostNet's services to local business owners. Along the way, Greenbaum hears the personal struggles of employees, and the challenges faced by some franchisees that aren't following the new Neighborhood Business Center model.

Each week, the Emmy Award-winning "Undercover Boss," now in its fourth season, follows a different executive as they leave the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their companies. While working alongside their employees, they witness how their decisions affect others, where the problems lie within their organizations, and get an up-close look at the good and the bad while discovering and rewarding the unsung heroes who make their companies run.

(AP) ? Missouri Lottery officials on Thursday verified one of two tickets that matched all six numbers to split a record $588 million Powerball jackpot, but that ticket holder ? and another in Arizona ? remained a mystery, even as neighbors and co-workers lamented their losses and gossiped about who may have won.

The tickets were sold at a convenience store in suburban Phoenix and a gas station in Dearborn, Mo., just off Interstate 29, the highway linking Kansas City to the Canadian border.

Missouri lottery officials said they verified a ticket that was presented to them Thursday and set a news conference for 11 a.m. CST Friday at North Platte High School, near where the ticket was bought.

Lottery Chief Operations Officer Gary Gonder couldn't provide any details, including whether the ticket was bought by someone from Missouri.

Speculation had many of Dearborn's 500 residents buzzing about who had won.

Cashiers Kristi Williams and Kelly Blount greeted customers with big smiles and questions about whether they had bought the winning ticket. No one had come forward to claim the prize by late Thursday morning, Missouri Lottery officials said.

"It's just awesome," Williams said. "It's so exciting. We can't even work."

Karen Meyers, a server at the Cook's Corner Cafe, where the daily special was roast beef and potatoes, said she didn't believe it at first when she heard the winning ticket had been sold nearby.

"I think it's wonderful! I hope someone local won it, not someone just passing through," she said. "It's a small town where everyone is really nice."

Kevin Bryan bought his ticket at the Trex Mart and made an extra trip to his mother's home in Dearborn to verify that the ticket he left on her counter wasn't, in fact, the winner.

"When I heard it was sold here in Dearborn I about fell over," Bryan said, as he hung Christmas lights outside his mother's home.

He said the only other local lottery win he could remember was when an area farmer won about $100,000 in scratch-off game years ago "and bought himself a combine."

The winning ticket sold in Arizona was purchased at a 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills near Phoenix, state lottery officials said. Customers poured into the store, to check their tickets and share in the big moment.

"I think it's crazy, and I also think it's great," said Bob Chebat, who manages the 4 Sons. "I'm glad that all that work yesterday wasn't for nothing."

The store was swept up in a nationwide ticket-buying spree preceding Wednesday's drawing, with the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to buy a shot at the payout.

Clerks at 4 Sons sold 986 Powerball tickets Wednesday, which Chebat said was well above average.

Baron Hartell, son of the owner of the Missouri store, said if the winner isn't a local resident it might have been a truck driver. Interstate 29 connects Kansas City to the Canadian border, so it's a busy thoroughfare in both directions.

"Even the truck drivers who come around, we see them every day, so they all feel like all locals to us," he said.

Store manager Chris Naurez said business had been "crazy" for Powerball tickets lately and that the store had sold about $27,000 worth of tickets in the last few days.

"This really puts Dearborn on the map," he said.

Kenny Gilbert, the general manager of Trex Mart, suggested his staff would be sharing in the $50,000 bounty that the store will be awarded for selling one of the winning tickets.

"The response from the owner was, 'I guess we'll be able to give out Christmas bonuses,'" Gilbert said. "That's nice, especially at this time of year."

Winners in both states have 180 days to claim their share of the prize money.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 5, 16, 22, 23, 29. The Powerball was 6. The $587.5 million payout represents the second-largest jackpot in U.S. history.

Tickets sold at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide ? about six times the volume from a week ago. That pushed the jackpot even higher, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association. The jackpot rolled over 16 consecutive times without a winner.

Bob Kangas realized Wednesday night that one of two winning Powerball jackpot tickets had been bought in Arizona, but he didn't immediately check his numbers.

"I didn't want to look because I just wanted to dream about being rich," Kangas said Thursday while checking his tickets at the 4 Sons store where he bought his tickets ? and where the winning ticket was sold.

"I just wanted to dream all night," he said, breathing a heavy sigh as he realized his tickets were not winners.

In a Mega Millions drawing in March, three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot. This remains the largest lottery payout of all time.

Court postpones ruling on Strauss-Kahn sex inquiry

DOUAI, France (Reuters) - A French court postponed a decision on Wednesday on requests that it call off a sex offence inquiry where former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn risks trial on a charge of "aggravated pimping".

The court in Douai, a town north of Paris, had been scheduled to rule on Wednesday on the last major inquiry the 63-year-old is fighting in France but announced instead that it would deliver a verdict on December 19.

"All we can do is wait patiently," Richard Malka, a defense lawyer for Strauss-Kahn, told Reuters. "All we can say is this shows that the arguments are sufficiently serious to justify taking time to examine them."

Strauss-Kahn was on the brink of entering the race for the 2012 French presidency when police in New York boarded his plane minutes before take-off in May last year and took him off to face allegations that he sexually assaulted hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo.

U.S. prosecutors dropped criminal charges weeks later, prompting Diallo to start civil proceedings, but his judicial woes multiplied on his return to his native France.

His name cropped up in relation to the so-called Carlton Affair, named after a Lille hotel at the center of police inquiries into sex parties attended by prostitutes and the then International Monetary Fund chief, on occasion in Washington.

A group rape charge was dropped in the Carlton inquiry after a prostitute withdrew her allegation but investigators are still pursuing Strauss-Kahn on the grounds that his involvement in sex parties attended by prostitutes may be construed as pimping - a point his legal defense team says does not stand up.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers have repeatedly argued that he did not know that women present at sex parties he attended were paid prostitutes.

Public prosecutor Guillaume Maigret said nothing could be inferred from the court postponement, but it drew criticism from the lawyer of another man being investigated on the same count as Strauss-Kahn -- police commissioner Jean-Christophe Lagarde.

Lagarde's lawyer Olivier Bluche said the request to halt the inquiry had been lodged on April 19, meaning that by the new court date the affair will have been weighing over his client for eight months.

"That's an extraordinarily long time for someone unjustifiably branded a suspect," he said.

Counseling with horses that heal | UWM News

Lisa Engel had no previous experience with horses, but the farm?s location and philosophy appealed to her. (Photos by Kyle R. Stevens)

A dog may be man?s best friend, but a horse may be able to help him (or her) unravel personal troubles.

That?s the thinking behind equine assisted therapy, which brings people together to ride or work with horses. With the help of counselors, many are able to begin to address problems in their lives.

?Horses are very empathetic animals,? says Lisa Engel. ?They seem to sense people?s moods and respond.?

Engel, who works at UWM four days a week on the administrative support staff in the School of Education advising office, also spends two days a week as part of the counseling team at Stepping Stone Farms, near Franksville.

Engel, a staff member in the School of Education, earned her master?s degree in educational psychology. Her work with the farm?s counseling program is helping her earn hours toward a state license.

An Army veteran with a master?s degree in Educational Psychology, Community Counseling, Engel needed 3,000 hours of counseling experience to earn her state license. While doing outreach as part of her practicum, she met Lia Sader, the executive director of Stepping Stone Farms, who invited her to join the team at the farm for her counseling experience.

Trying something different

Although Engel had never worked with horses before, the philosophy of the farm and the rural setting attracted her.

?I like the idea of trying different things,? she says of the equine therapy approach. She quickly learned the names of all the horses, and discovered that each had its own personality. All the horses at the farm are gentle and used to working with people, but they are large animals and need to be treated with respect and care, she adds.

Engel completed a seminar to become certified through Greg Kersten?s O.K. Corral Series. Kersten is the founder of EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association), an international nonprofit association for professionals using equine therapy to address mental health and human development needs.

Clients who come to the farm can try riding or simply grooming the horses ? whatever they?re comfortable with. The key to success, says Sader, is building a trusting relationship with the horse. With the help of counselors, clients can learn to overcome fears, build nonverbal communication skills, and gain self-confidence and self-control.

The nonprofit farm offers therapy, group counseling and learning programs. The therapy clients are referred from Employee Assistance Programs or other agencies. Some come on their own. They may be abuse victims, or may be struggling with behavior issues, post-traumatic stress, low self-esteem, or stress and anxiety.

Working with the horses helps eliminate some of the stigma of going to therapy, especially for young people, says Sader. ?They like to say they?re going to their horseback-riding lesson instead of saying they?re going to therapy.?

The veterans connection

Working with veterans is very much a bonus of her experiences at the farm, says Engel, who served for three years in a military intelligence unit in Panama. After her marriage to another soldier and her discharge from the service, she moved to South Korea, working as a teacher at a school near the Army base. She completed her 600-hour counseling practicum with Veteran Quest, an organization that offered counseling services at no charge to veterans and their families.

?Vets who may not be ready to admit they want or need help can begin to heal in the environment and learn from the animals.?
- Lisa Engel

Engel would like to get more student/veteran groups involved at the farm. ?We are really hoping to make a connection with the student veterans? groups on campus to volunteer, and to receive services if they want.?

Veterans are traditionally a very good source of volunteers for all kinds of community projects, says Engel, because they like to continue to serve after they leave the military. Individuals or small groups of veterans have helped out at the farm, putting up fences around the pasture area and building the tack room, she adds.

The farm has also begun working with veterans, many of whom have found their way there without formal programs. The facility is part of Operation Free Ride, offering rides to veterans and their families, and is also reaching out to veterans with issues related to their service.

Just being active can help veterans suffering from anxiety, stress and insomnia, says Engel. ?It?s a very therapeutic environment. The ?therapy? doesn?t necessarily need to be formal to be effective. So vets who may not be ready to admit they want or need help can begin to heal in the environment and learn from the animals.?

For example, the nonverbal communication needed to work with the horses can help stressed veterans begin to rebuild their ability to communicate with others close to them. Handling large animals also requires respect, focus, control and patience, all of which can help in dealing with postwar stresses, says Engel. And most of the horses have been rescued from abuse, evoking empathy from veterans and other clients who?ve also suffered.

Cats, dogs and other pets can be a comfort, says Engel, but the horses are especially helpful in therapy because they are so sensitive to human emotions and feelings. If treated with respect, they bond with humans.

One day, a veteran who came to the farm to help out was really feeling down because of personal troubles related to his post-traumatic stress disorder. One of the horses just put his head down on the veteran?s shoulder, Engel recalls. ?That was what that guy needed at that moment.?

Study finds herbalists at higher urinary cancer risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A small new study from Taiwan links a widely banned substance traditionally used in Chinese medicine to an elevated risk for kidney and bladder cancers among professional herbalists.

Herbs, such as fang chi, that contain the plant-derived aristolochic acid, are known to cause cancer as well as kidney failure, and the current study suggests that working with these herbs raised urinary cancer rates among Taiwanese herbalists who handled fang chi before its ban in 2003.

"This is the first study that looks at an occupational group that has been heavily exposed to aristolochic acid," said the study's lead author Dr. Hsiao-Yu Yang, an occupational medicine professor at Tzu Chi University in Taiwan.

Previous research has found that Chinese herbalists have three times higher risk for urinary system cancers compared with the general population, but those reports didn't connect the pattern to a specific work-related factor.

To see whether fang chi exposure could be involved, Yang's team used national databases to track 6,564 Chinese herbalists working in Taiwan between 1985 and 1998. In 2002, the herbalists took surveys about their recollections of processing medicines such as fang chi in their practices.

The occupational researchers honed in on 24 herbalists who had contracted cancer of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder and urethra, and compared that group with 140 herbalists who were healthy at the time of the 2002 survey.

About two-thirds of the herbalists in both groups were women.

Herbalists who packed or sold fang chi had 2.6 times the risk of urinary cancer compared with herbalists who avoided fang chi in their practice, Yang's team reports in the Journal of Urology. Those who ground the herb had 2.2 times higher risk.

The results took into account other potentially cancer-causing factors such as cigarette smoking, use of hair dyes or exposure to arsenic from deep-water wells.

AN ONGOING THREAT

In 2001, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned consumers of the dangers of aristolochic acid-containing herbs, and regulations established in the Europe Union in 2004 effectively banned the substance. However, Internet sites still sell the processed drug or source plant, which remains legal in China and several other countries.

For Yang, the study also highlights the fact that little-regulated Chinese herbal medicines in many cases still contain aristolochic acid.

"We want to push our government to prohibit all drugs that contain aristolochic acid," Yang said. One example, xi xin, a common cold medicine still in use in Taiwan, contains aristolochic acid, he pointed out.

Yang and colleagues also found that 19 percent of Taiwanese herbalists had traces of aristolochic acid in their blood three years after the ban, indicating that the drug was probably still in use.

That possibility is among the reasons at least one expert dismissed the new study as flawed.

"It's a low quality study, and I wouldn't rely on it at all," said Mikel Aickin, methodology editor at BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, who was not involved in the research.

The report's main weakness, Aickin told Reuters Health, was that many of the herbalists personally used fang chi outside of the clinic, making it impossible for researchers to determine whether the increases in urinary system cancer came from a work hazard or personal consumption.

The claim that handling fang chi is an occupational danger to herbalists isn't true, Aickin said. "It's really just a very clumsy study that's rediscovered what's already known about the carcinogenesis of taking it as a treatment. They're producing nonsense," he added.

Yang agreed that the study could not determine whether the Chinese herbalists put themselves at additional risk by personally consuming fang chi.

"This occupational group may also take fang chi - I cannot say that it is not impossible that the disease comes from taking the herbs - but their occupation contributes to the etiology greatly," Yang said.

"Now that this paper is out, I suspect and hope that there will be more interest in worker safety in this industry," said Steven Given, dean of clinical education at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. "I think this is a very good sign."

A "GLOBAL DISEASE"?

Beyond herbalists, and despite near-worldwide bans, cases of aristolochic acid-linked cancers and other illnesses continue to crop up from the Balkans to Beijing.

Fang chi was traditionally used to treat arthritis and swelling, but aristolochic acid has been found in a wide variety of dietary supplements and alternative medicines (see list of examples here: http://1.usa.gov/V8MkNx).

"This is a potential global disease," said Graham Lord, a nephrologist at King's College London who worked on the first case of kidney failure from aristolochic acid reported in the U.K.

"It may be under-recognized, but in the last two or three years, there has been an increasing number of epidemiological studies coming out showing that there could be potentially tens of thousands of patients out there that have been exposed," Lord told Reuters Health.

Doctors may not immediately associate kidney diseases with the ingredient that contaminates some herbal preparations and can be easily bought over the Internet, experts said.

'It's quite hard to diagnose, there is no simple test that you can perform, it's a fairly specialized form of testing," Lord said.

To help in the diagnosis, Lord and colleagues in Belgium are currently working on a checklist for doctors to help determine if aristolochic acid is at the root of a patient's kidney failure or urinary system cancer.

Fitch says Argentina default is 'probable'

NEW YORK (AP) ? The credit rating agency Fitch Ratings on Tuesday downgraded Argentina, which is locked in a court battle in New York over its debt, and said the country would probably default.

Fitch cut its long-term rating for Argentina to "CC" from "B," a downgrade of five notches, and cut its short-term rating to "C'' from "B." A rating of "C'' is one step above default.

U.S. judge Thomas Griesa of Manhattan federal court last week ordered Argentina to set aside $1.3 billion for certain investors in its bonds by Dec. 15, even as Argentina pursues appeals.

Those investors don't want to go along with a debt restructuring that followed an Argentine default in 2002. If Argentina is forced to pay in full, other holders of debt totaling more than $11 billion are expected to demand immediate payment as well.

Argentine politicians, even those opposed to President Cristina Fernandez, have nearly unanimously criticized the judge's ruling as threatening the success of the debt relief that enabled Argentina to grow again.

Ratings by agencies like Fitch are used by investors to evaluate the safety of a country's debt. Lower ratings can make it more expensive for countries to borrow money on the bond market, exacerbating their financial problems.

Argentina is in a deepening recession and is grappling with social unrest. Besides the court case, Fitch cited a "tense and polarized political climate" and public dissatisfaction with high inflation, weak infrastructure and currency.

Fitch also said that Argentina's economy has slowed sharply this year.

Of the two other major rating agencies, Standard & Poor's has a rating of "B-" for Argentina, five steps above default, and Moody's rates it "B3 negative," also five steps above default.

Grocer, 70, gives stores to his employees ? for free

Just in time for Christmas, a retiring Minnesota grocery store owner is giving his roughly 400 employees quite a gift ? ownership of his three stores.

Instead of accepting any of the multiple offers he received from large national chains to purchase his stores, Joe Lueken, 70, will transfer ownership of his two Lueken?s Village Foods in Bemidji, Minn., and another one in Wahpeton, N.D., to his employees as part of an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). The transfer of ownership from the Lueken family to the employees will begin on Jan. 1, and will not cost the employees any money.

The amount of shares each employee receives will be based on length of service and salary. The program is expected to pay the Lueken family off for the sale in three to five years, according to a report by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

?My employees are largely responsible for any success I've had, and they deserve to get some of the benefits of that," Lueken told the Star Tribune. "You can't always take. You also have to give back."

Story: NFL cheerleaders shave heads to support coach

After being informed by his two sons that they were not interested in taking over the business, Lueken and his family came up with the employee stock ownership plan to transfer ownership.

"We could have hired a gunslinger from Minneapolis, but that didn't sit well because the reward wouldn't go to the proper people," Lueken's son Jeff told the Star Tribune.

After 46 years in the business, Lueken, who has Parkinson's disease, is retiring to travel the world with his wife. Lueken announced last week that Brent Sicard, who started in a janitor job at Lueken?s in 1998 and worked his way up to a top management position, will take over as the company?s president and chief executive officer.

Lueken has acted like a regular guy even as his business grew, driving vans for the company and hanging out in the break room with the other employees over the years, according to the Star Tribune.

Video: Girl sends thousands of letters to soldiers overseas

"Joe would arrive at 3:30 every morning," Sicard told the newspaper. "No one could outstock Joe. No one could outwalk Joe. No one can outthink Joe. He can walk through a $2 million warehouse and tell you within a few thousand dollars how much is in there."

Lueken has also been giving to charitable causes for years, helping the Bemidji State University Foundation give scholarships to students in need.

(AP) ? Mike Holmgren's run as a team president is over, ending prematurely and before he planned.

For weeks, he has hung around Cleveland's offices doing what he could to help new owner Jimmy Haslam. Holmgren attended meetings, practices and games. He talked with players, coaches and consulted with his replacement, CEO Joe Banner, now in charge of running the Browns.

Holmgren made his pitch for the team to keep coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert beyond this season.

And now, there's nothing left. It's time for Holmgren to move on to the next phase of his life, which may or may not include another foray as an NFL coach.

Last week, he knew his work was finished.

"I was done," he said. "I already passed the baton."

Less than three years after signing a five-year contract with former owner Randy Lerner to fix Cleveland's franchise, Holmgren is leaving. His final day with the Browns will be Friday, and after that he and his wife, Kathy, will return to their home in Arizona, where the 64-year-old will contemplate his future.

"We are going to fly to Phoenix on Saturday and catch my breath a little bit and take it easy and ride my motorcycle," Holmgren said. "I honestly don't know if I'm going to go back to work immediately or not and I don't know if it's going to be in football."

This was not the exit he envisioned.

Holmgren thought he would leave amid a playoff push or as Cleveland celebrated finally winning a Super Bowl title like the one he helped bring to Green Bay. But everything changed when Haslam bought the Browns for $1.05 billion and hired Banner, who built the Philadelphia Eagles into perennial contenders.

Holmgren was the odd-man out.

He stayed to assist Haslam and Banner with the transition, and while he got some things accomplished, it became obvious he was no longer needed.

The Browns went just 12-31 under Holmgren, but he's proud of restoring the business side of the Browns and an on-the-field turnaround that may not be evident for several more years.

As he walks away, Holmgren was asked if he feels somewhat unsatisfied.

"Any time you don't reach your goals in this business on one hand then, yeah," he said. "Having said that, though, I really can feel good, and the guys who have been here can feel good about what the future holds. But time will tell."

It wasn't until he left the sideline that Holmgren realized how much he missed coaching. He longed for the interaction with players, and the chance to teach. He still hasn't gotten comfortable watching games from the press box, and he's hinted that he might coach again ? in the right situation.

After reports surfaced that he would be interested in coaching in Dallas if Jason Garrett was fired, Holmgren said he did not know where those rumors started. However, they gained more traction when he recently met owner Jerry Jones on the field before the Cowboys hosted the Browns.

Holmgren said he called Jones beforehand and they agreed it was OK to be seen together publicly.

"I phoned him and said if this caused any problem for anyone I apologize for that," Holmgren said. "He said absolutely not. I said, 'Listen, every time we play against each other, and it's been a number of times, we've always said hello and been cordial.' I said maybe this time I shouldn't do that if you rather I'd not do that. And he said, 'If you don't come and see me' in typical fashion, if you know him. I said, 'OK.' I talked to Stephen (Jones' son) before then Jerry came out. We talked about the stuff we always talk about ? family and the Salvation Army."

Holmgren, who last coached for Seattle in 2008, insists he isn't close to making a decision on a return to coaching.

"As of right now, I really haven't given it much thought other than the fact there are no plans right now," he said.

Banner said if Holmgren decided to coach, the Browns don't have any agreement where they would be compensated.

"Mike's free to do what he wants next in this field or whatever he'd like to do," he said.

Banner has spent time over the past few weeks meeting with Holmgren and has gotten a better handle on where the Browns are as an organization.

"He was just incredibly helpful and professional and supportive," Banner said. "As you know, we were more than happy to have him stay. But as he said from the beginning that once he kind of made the difference he could, it would probably be time to leave. I'm really appreciative of the time we had together. I think it helped me. I learned a lot through it."

During what he called "brutally honest" conversations with Banner, Holmgren gave strong endorsements not only for Shurmur and Heckert, but others working for the Browns. Before leaving, he wanted to make sure some of the people he had hired were given a fair chance to keep their jobs.

"All I could do is be honest and tell him what I thought," he said. "We had to make a bunch of changes in our first year, too. And so, we talked about that. We talked about all that stuff and that was the transition period. And now all the talking is done and I said what I had to say and now we'll see happens at the end of the year."

Holmgren exits the Browns with one regret ? not winning enough.

He feels he did all he could, and although he thought he understood the city's passion for the Browns, it was only when he came here that he fully grasped it.

He's leaving, but some of him will stay in Cleveland. When he watches the Browns from now on, he'll do so with pride.

"When they do well, I'll feel good about that," he said. "I'll feel good for the players and I'll feel good for the coaches and the organization and the people because I was here. I am very thankful that I got this opportunity to do this."

The Oscar race now officially includes?Les Mis?rables and Zero Dark Thirty ? which shouldn?t come as a huge shock, seeing how the former is an adaptation of producer Cameron Mackintosh?s award-winning Broadway smash from director Tom Hooper (The King?s Speech). Meanwhile, the latter is a drama/thriller about the hunt for Osama bin Laden from Oscar-winning Hurt Locker?screenwriter and director duo, Mark Boal and Kathryn Bigelow.

Nonetheless, both films had their first public screenings over the Thanksgiving holiday frame and drew unadulterated praise from those in attendance. Read on for our breakdown of what the general consensus is for both titles? so far.

Hooper?s Les Miz has long been regarded as something special, seeing how trailer footage suggests it infuses Mackintosh?s original pop musical with a stripped-down aesthetic that helps ground the flamboyant proceedings (unlike Joel Schumacher?s Phantom of the Opera or Rob Marshall?s Nine, to name a few examples). Moreover, the cast boasts heralded actors with?professional singing experience;?that?s in opposition to some of the recent movie musicals that?ve relied on either name-actor casts (Mamma Mia!) or Broadway veterans (Rent).

Reviews for Les Miz are embargoed for the time being, but Indiewire has rounded up Twitter reactions from several critics and film journalists who were at the first open showing. Here?s a bullet-point summary of the responses:

  • Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean could land his first Best Actor Oscar nod.
  • Anne Hathaway as Fantine is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination.
  • Eddie Redmayne as Marius turns in a solid supporting performance.
  • Russell Crowe takes a ?Jesus Christ Superstar rock-opera? approach that distinguishes Inspector Javert (but may not be to everyone?s taste).
  • The film as a whole is a ?tour de force? and ?tearjerker? that seems destined to become a Best Picture nominee.

Gene Chizik, Frank Spaziani and Danny Hope got the pink slips many expected were coming after disappointing seasons.

North Carolina State getting rid of Tom O'Brien took more than a few people off guard. So did Colorado letting Jon Embree go after only two seasons.

Sunday was a tumultuous one around college football, with five coaches losing their jobs to bring the total openings in FBS to 12 ? including four in the Southeastern Conference.

Chizik was fired by Auburn after one of the most stunning and dramatic falls in college football history. The Tigers won the second national championship in program history behind Cam Newton in 2010. This season, Auburn finished 3-9 and did not win an SEC game. The Tigers lost the Iron Bowl 49-0 to rival Alabama.

Auburn endured the worst slide within two years of winning a national championship of any team since The Associated Press poll started in 1936 and hadn't lost this many games since going 0-10 in 1950. The decision came 17 months after Auburn gave Chizik a contract worth some $3.5 million annually through 2015 with a hefty buyout of $7.5 million.

"When expectations are not met, I understand changes must be made," Chizik said in a statement.

He was 33-19 in four seasons and 15-17 in SEC games.

More than 6-6 was expected from Purdue this season, but Hope and the Boilermakers needed a late rush just to get bowl eligible.

Hope won't get to coach Purdue's latest bowl game. He went 22-27 in four seasons.

Spaziani's Boston College teams have had progressively worse records in each of his four seasons. The Eagles went 2-10 this season. He finished 22-29 as the head coach.

North Carolina State finished 7-5 this season, and 4-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, including an upset of Florida State. Not great, but not all that far away from expectations.

Still, it wasn't enough to get O'Brien a seventh season.

O'Brien went 40-35 after coming to Raleigh from Boston College following the 2006 season. He took the Wolfpack to three bowl games, but won't coach in a fourth when N.C. State receives its bid next week. He went 22-26 in ACC play with not nearly enough marquee victories.

Athletic director Debbie Yow said O'Brien's buyout would be $1.2 million over four years.

"Coach O'Brien and I agree on the goal of becoming a Top 25 program. We just don't agree on what it takes to do that, how to get there," Yow said.

Colorado finished this season 1-11 and Embree was 4-21 in his two seasons since replacing Dan Hawkins.

Modeling the breaking points of metallic glasses

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Metallic glass alloys (or liquid metals) are three times stronger than the best industrial steel, but can be molded into complex shapes with the same ease as plastic. These materials are highly resistant to scratching, denting, shattering and corrosion. So far, they have been used in a variety of products from golf clubs to aircraft components. And, some smartphone manufacturers are even looking to cast their next-generation phone cases out of it.

But despite their potential, the mechanical properties of these substances are still a scientific mystery. One lingering question is why they have such wildly different toughness and breaking points, depending on how they are made. Although this may not be a huge concern for small applications like smartphone cases it will be extremely important if these materials are ever used in structural applications where they would need to support large loads.

Recently, Christopher Rycroft of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (Berkeley Lab's) Computational Research Division has developed some novel computational techniques to address this question. When Rycroft combined these techniques with a mechanical model of metallic glass developed by Eran Bouchbinder and his colleagues at Israel's Weizmann Institute, the two were able to propose a novel explanation of the physical process behind the large variations in breaking points of metallic glasses. Their results are also in qualitative agreement with laboratory experiments.

"We hope that this work will contribute to the understanding of metallic glasses, and aid in their use in practical applications. Ultimately, we would like to develop a tool capable of making quantitative predictions about the toughness of metallic glasses depending on their preparation method," says Rycroft.

Rycroft and Bouchbinder are co-authors on a paper recently published in Physical Review Letters.

What is a Metallic Glass? And, Why is it So Difficult to Model?

Scientists define "glass" as a material that cools from a liquid state to a solid state without crystallizing -- which is when atoms settle into a lattice, or a highly regular spatial pattern. Because many metal lattices are riddled with defects, these materials "deform," or permanently bend out of shape, relatively easily. When crystallization does not occur, the atoms settle into a random arrangement. This atomic structure allows metallic glasses to spring back into shape instead of deforming permanently. And without the defects, some metallic glasses also have extremely efficient magnetic properties.

Rycroft notes that one of the biggest mysteries in condensed matter physics is how glass transitions from a liquid state to a solid state. To successfully create metallic glass, the metal has to cool relatively quickly before atomic lattices form.

"Depending on how you prepare or manipulate these metallic glasses, the breaking points can differ by a factor of 10," says Rycroft. "Because scientists don't completely understand how glass transitions from liquid to solid state, they have not been able to fully explain why the breaking points of these materials vary so widely."

According to Bouchbinder, computer models also have a hard time predicting the breaking points of metallic glass because the timescale of events varies dramatically -- from microseconds to seconds. For instance, researchers can bend or pull the material for several seconds before it breaks, which occurs almost instantaneously. And the material's internal plastic deformation -- the process where it irreversibly deforms -- occurs on an intermediate timescale.

"We've actually been able to develop some numerical methods to capture these differences in timescales," says Rycroft, of the techniques used in the recent paper.

When Rycroft incorporated these methods into Bouchbinder's mechanical model and calibrated it based on available data, the duo managed to simulate and better understand the breaking points of metallic glass alloys based on their preparation process. He notes that this model is rather unique as it combines novel and flexible numerical methods with recent insights about the physics of glasses. The simulations have also been able to predict the large decreases in toughness that are seen in laboratory experiments.

"If you can vary the way metallic glass is prepared in computer models and capture the differences in how it breaks, you can pose a reasonable explanation for why this occurs. This might also give you a better idea about how the glass transitions from a liquid to a solid, as well as the mechanical properties of a glass," says Rycroft. "We've essentially created something that might evolve into a tool for predicting the toughness of metallic glasses."

"For quite some time I've wanted to calculate the fracture toughness of metallic glasses, but knew that this was a very tough mathematical and computational challenge, certainly well above my abilities, and probably above the capabilities of conventional computational solid mechanics," says Bouchbinder. "I think that Rycroft's methods have opened the way to new possibilities and I am enthusiastic to see where this can lead us."

This work was done with a grant for developing new numerical algorithms with scientific and engineering applications from the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Recreational Sport ? Steps to Follow When Choosing Your Leisure ...

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don?t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one?s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don?t. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.

ConocoPhillips selling Caspian Sea claim for $5B

HOUSTON (AP) ? ConocoPhillips is selling a minority interest in drilling sites off the coast of Kazakhstan for about $5 billion as it continues to downsize.

The Houston company has aggressively sold refineries, pipelines and other assets over the past few years to remake itself as an independent oil and gas producer. It has sold more than $20 billion in assets and investments since 2010.

The buyer of ConocoPhillips' 8.4 percent stake, part of a production sharing agreement in the Caspian Sea, is India's ONGC Videsh Ltd.

The field is being developed jointly by Shell, Exxon Mobil, Total, Kazakh state-run oil company KazMunaiGas and the Inpex Corp.

ConocoPhillips anticipates a fourth-quarter charge of about $400 million related to the sale.

The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2013.

How to Become Recertified in Pet Loss Grief Counseling

November 22nd, 2012 by admin

There are already a significant number of pet loss grief counselors in the United States. They have been certified to offer mental health and emotional support in a unique field. However, those with certification should be aware of the requirements to get recertified. Certification typically lasts three years. To be eligible to renew pet loss grief certification, the medical doctor, nurse or minister must have been actively practicing. In other words, it may be desirable to reapply several months before current certifications are due to lapse. The counselor must have been in practice for about 500 hours or more during the last two or three years. He or she should also have had 50 hours of continuing education. The standards for pet loss grief continuing education are somewhat tolerant and can include seminars and college courses. Publications in academic journals may meet up to half of the 50 hour requirement.

Why Camera Flame Wars Will Not Make You A Better ... - Filmmaker IQ

I?ve been involved with online camera and filmmaking discussions for nearly a decade now and in that time I have seen one of the most important shifts in the history of filmmaking for the beginning filmmaker and professional alike: The Digital Revolution. We?re coming to the completion of that digital shift ? technology is maturing and these new tools are now widely available. But now what? What is the future?

Technology can only progress so far. It will get better but not at this astounding pace we?ve seen in the last 5 years. Now we are entering a perfect storm of social propaganda that threatens to enslave us in a never ending [camera] consumer cycle and it has nothing to do making films or making films better.

For 95% of video applications, what is currently available on the market and affordable to most people is ?good enough?. ?For the remainder 5% of projects there are a myriad of options available for rent.?And yet I keep reading comments like ?I?ve been asking for a camera that does x, y, z? or ?This camera is crap because it can?t do 60p? or ?Z Camera company is finally listening to their customers.?

Bullshit.?No camera is holding you back.

You are holding yourself back.

The digital revolution has ushered in an era of artistic freedom. But freedom is scary. Freedom means we have to take responsibility for our success and our failure. This freedom also means your audience now has the same tools as you and you no longer belong to a special class with?privileged?access. ?Freedom requires you to compete, which means you have to be good. You have to bring something unique to the table. That?s downright terrifying.

The reaction is to build up imaginary walls ? Walls to separate you as a REAL Filmmaker?from the hobbyist. Walls that reinforce your?superiority?over the riff raff.

And this is exactly what?s happening with camera discussions and flame wars.?And the camera manufacturers love it.

They want your money.

I am a dyed-in-the-wool capitalist. I have no moral issue with companies making money. They build the tools I use to tell my stories and without that exchange for profit I would not be able to do what I want to do. It?s not a zero-sum game where they win and we loose ? it?s a win-win. Filmmakers and Manufacturers have different objectives and our relationship is mutually beneficial.

The problem emerges when we as filmmakers loose sight of our objective (to tell stories) and play into imaginary walls vanity and class. The camera manufacturers have product to sell and once everybody has a camera, they need to convince us to buy another one to keep the revenue coming in. That?s when they appeal to our need for vanity, helping us build up our imaginary walls. The result is a constant state of dissatisfaction for sole purpose of selling cameras to replace the perfectly functional cameras we already own.

?I want it now. Give it to me now, or I will scream and scream until I am sick!!!!?

That hissy-fit quote above came from Philip Bloom?s run down on the new Sony F5 and F55 cameras. In context of the article it is clear he is being facetious. The F5 and F55 are studio grade cameras made for professional productions and he?s playing on the juvenile attitude for comedic effect.

But the childish sentiment is not uncommon in the online arena where aspiring (and inexperienced) filmmakers are trying?desperately?to crawl up the social ladder.

If Hollywood is about the manufacturing of dreams, then the industry of filmmaking is the wide glossy-eyed?pursuit?of those dreams. As filmmakers, we?re all looking for the golden ticket in.

For some, the camera has become that golden ticket. The camera has become a symbol of filmmaker?s status than a tool of creation. Higher end cameras are?perceived?as a luxury item catering to the filmmaker who has a ?refined taste? or ?great eye?.

It is more than just brand loyalty. With the product life cycle of cameras getting shorter and shorter (about 2-3 years before the community deems them ?obsolete? even though they?ll function much longer) maintaining the imaginary walls as a filmmaker means you must have access to the latest camera offerings. You can?t be seen with last year?s model. But the cost of cinema-level cameras keeps wanna-be-filmmakers from ?buying-in? to the?prestigious?class.

And it?s here where the dangers of the camera flame wars rears their ugly head. Ownership and Experience are not prerequisites to discussion anymore, all you need to at least waft a scent of filmmaking authority is sound like you know something.

Fanboys and Speculation

It happens like clockwork. Every time a new camera is announced, even before official press releases are sent out, blogs get filled up with comments from people either in eager excitement or trashing the camera. These debates almost always devolve into flame wars ? any discussion on the grey areas quickly posterized into black and white ironically by people who shout the loudest for 12-bit color space.

Almost all ?camera news? prior to a release is pure speculation.?In the fast paced socially connected online world, information is a valued commodity and being perceived as ?first? with any sort of news is key, even if that news is wishful thinking and/or completely made up.

Speculation is so prominent that a cottage industry has sprung up around it. There are sites?that contain the word ?rumors? for almost every hotly anticipated brand.

Of course fanboys eat it up. Fanboys have identified themselves as lords of the brand and superior to the ignorant masses. Having information on any new camera (even if it?s not their preferred brand) gives them a sense of authority that they can lull over their fellow internet commenter. Being able to say, ?This camera sucks, you should wait until my favorite company releases their new camera? makes them feel as though they are speaking with a voice of experience even though that experience does not come from actually making films or making anything useful to society.

But what value to REAL filmmaker does speculation have? ? Absolutely nothing.

What serious filmmaker is going to base a hefty buying decision on what amounts to nothing more than gossip?

Why should an aspiring filmmakers put off producing a film in order to wait for a new camera to arrive that?s only talked about by people that have never seen it and never used it? Speculation may be ?fun? but it?s taking your energy away from what really matters.

None of this Crap has to do with Filmmaking

Filmmaking begins with a camera, that fact cannot be skirted around. The Camera defines the art form, but the camera is not defining element of a film.

Having the same type of camera that was used on?The Hobbit?for example does not mean you have the same screenwriters, the same visionary director, celebrity actors, story rights, production designers, locations, lighting specialists, prop designers, stunt coordinators, editors, digital artists, location managers, producers, office staff, marketing representatives and distribution deals that are the REAL reason The Hobbit will be successful.

It?s belabored point and so tiresomely cliche: A camera will not make you a better filmmaker. It will not make a great movie.

Thanks to technology, the camera is starting to become the?least important element on a set: trumped by things like a fantastic story and extraordinarily talented cast and crew.

And that?s the terrifying fact, especially to fan boys.

Confessions of an Addict

I have a lot of gear.

I have a garage full of grip stuff and shelves of cameras. I?ve reinvested most of my money working professionally back into my collection. Do I need it? Yes, it makes my job easier. But they also make my job harder. More gear, more choices, more problems ? more space to store it all.

Running Filmmaker IQ, I?ve been exposed to a lot of the propaganda that camera manufacturers and camera fanboys throw my way. I?ve even been a?participant?of it. I get excited over new cameras just like everyone else and I admit that I have felt that my now two-and-a-half year old Canon 5D MkII is some how an inferior camera ? the same camera that has make films that won awards and had RED users complementing me the image quality.

But?occasionally, when I look at a well-lit piece of video I shot with my?five-year-old Sony EX1 camera, I take pause and marvel at the clarity. This really does look good. ?When I compared my 5D MkII with the MkIII last April at NAB, I saw no?discernible?difference between the two that jumped out at me despite what some on the Internet were telling me.

I know there are limitations of these cameras ? they?re not perfect. But?I can take out the credit card and order any camera I want. I sometimes make deals with myself ? if I reach a certain income, I?ll reward myself with this lens or that light or that camera. But all that expensive gear ? it?s nothing without a story to tell, great actors, a great story and a great soundtrack. What?s the point of credit card debt if there?s nothing to shoot?

And perhaps my eyes are starting to fail me as I get older. But as my age adds up, my heart gets wiser. I connect to films differently now. It?s not about the clarity of 4K projection or the?pristine?nature of the image, it?s about whether I care after the first 10 minutes.

Go out and make your stories. Gear is important, there?s no getting around that. But never loose perspective on the real reason why people watch films in the first place ? for the story.
