What to Do When You Feel Blah About Your Job | World of Psychology
Or maybe you don?t feel dread, exactly. Instead, it?s a vague feeling. Something between despair and delight ? perhaps indifference.? You?re not particularly excited about your job. But you?re also not running for the hills.
Either way, your job isn?t doing it for you: You?re feeling blah.
And you?re not alone. According to a 2011 survey by consulting company Accenture, 57 percent of women and 59 percent of men were dissatisfied with their jobs.
Blah feelings can mean many things. The key is to dig deeper, and see how you can improve your work situation ? and ultimately your life. Below, two seasoned coaches share their wisdom on what to do.
Excavating Your Blah Feelings
For starters, consider if the blahs follow you after work. ?Check in and see if you feel blah when on vacation, over the weekend, and when doing things outside of work that are restorative or fun,? said Rachel W. Cole, a life coach and retreat leader.
Let?s say they don?t. Let?s say your blah feelings are isolated to your work. But is it your profession as a whole or something about your particular job that?s the problem?
?Is it the people, the tasks, the subject matter, the hours, the pressure of a tight deadline, the too-much-time-glued-to-a-computer-screen?? said Michelle Ward, the When I Grow Up Coach, who?s helped hundreds of people create the career they think they can?t have ? or discover in the first place.
For instance, Ward worked with a teacher who wanted her help in finding a new career path. After six sessions, however, she realized that she didn?t need to switch careers; she needed to switch jobs. Today, Ward?s client is working at ?another school where the staff [is] kind and open to new ideas,? Ward said.
If you?re not sure which parts of your job are problematic, for several days, keep a notebook close by as you work, she said. Any time you?re feeling blah, jot down precisely what you?re doing. ?Get as specific as you can,? Ward said.
Identifying Your Hungers and Values
Determining your true values and desires is an important step toward realizing a fulfilling career and life. Does your current job align with your deepest values or desires?
Cole works with clients to identify their hungers so they can lead well-fed lives. ?Practice noticing what doesn?t feel good [or] right, [which] usually points to a hunger,? she said. She also suggested answering these journal prompts:
- ?I?m afraid I can?t/won?t get it, but what I really desire is??
- ?No one in my life knows I secretly hunger for??
- ?If I?m honest with myself, I?m deeply and truly hungry for??
Ward asks her clients to complete a ?Values Game? at this site. ?[It] helps you hone in ? and then prioritize ? what your values are,? she said.
She also suggested readers reflect on meaningful moments in their lives. ?If they get clear on why those moments felt that way to them, then their values aren?t far behind,? she said.
Switching Careers or Pursuing Passions on the Side
Should you stay with your current career ? or should you switch professions altogether? ?It boils down to what?s meaningful to [you], what feels enough,? Ward said.
Some people are perfectly happy doing work they?re good at ? and then volunteering, sewing or styling on the side, she said.
However, others yearn to do things they?re passionate about as their profession, she said. For these individuals a side gig simply isn?t enough.
But, of course, switching careers isn?t simple. So ?don?t do it unless you really just have to,? Ward said. ?You need that ache, that sense of regret if you don?t go for it.?
Again, self-reflection can help you in making this difficult decision. Cole suggested asking yourself these questions:
- ?How does work make me feel??
- ?Is it my specific workplace that doesn?t work for me or is it the career itself??
- ?Does the job leave me enough time and energy to pursue my passion after work??
- ?Are there ways to change my current job to meet some or all of my needs [such as] delegating?to others, asking to telecommute, etc.??
- ?If I had a year to live, and I still needed to employed, would I stay here or leave??

Remember that ?It?s never ever too late in life to change your mind, switch paths, try something new, change our mind again, do a U-turn or take a sharp left,? Cole said. Linear career paths are rare, she said.
?Switch up your life to match who you are now and what you know about yourself,? she said.

Why you shouldn't worry about Android 4.2 updates
Using a skinned version of Android? You’re already up-to-date on 4.1.
We’re not huge proponents of using the term “skin” to describe the manufacturer customizations put on most Android-based smartphones. In most cases, the changes are more than skin deep. Look at the latest versions of HTC’s Sense and Samsung’s TouchWiz and you’ll see features and UI changes that go beyond mere visual gimmicks. But it’s a term that most people are familiar with, so let’s stick with it.
So if you’re using a skinned Android phone, chances are you’re accustomed to waiting for software updates. It’s a fact of life for every non-Nexus smartphone. And with the announcement of Android 4.2 earlier this week comes the certainty of more waiting for updates to drop. Few devices are on Jelly Bean, and OEM updates already in the works will be based around 4.1 rather than 4.2. After that, there’s the standard maze of regulator and carrier approval processes to traverse, adding additional weeks to the update roll-out timeframe. And with the holidays looming, and CES and MWC approaching thereafter, we doubt we’ll see Android 4.2 on many current devices before spring 2013. Engineering effort will be spent getting new products ready for launch, rather than chasing a minor OS update.
But really, that doesn’t matter. And the reason why goes to the heart of what Android 4.2 actually is. Before release it was referred to internally as Jelly Bean MR1 -- MR standing for “maintenance release.” And a glance down Android 4.2’s feature list further confirms that there’s not a whole lot of game-changing stuff to be found, rather additional polish to the existing Android UI. Hence the decision to stick with the Jelly Bean moniker -- Google is striking a balance between pushing out new features and allowing hardware partners to catch up.

China bans toy planes, pigeons to secure congress
BEIJING (AP) ? Don't roll down the taxi windows. Don't buy a remote-controlled plane without a police chief's permission. And don't release your pigeons.
Beijing is tightening security as its all-important Communist Party congress approaches, and some of the measures seem downright bizarre. Kitchen knives and pencil sharpeners reportedly have been pulled from store shelves, and there's even a rumor that authorities are on the lookout for seditious messages on pingpong balls.
The congress, which begins Nov. 8, will name new leaders to run the world's most populous country and second-largest economy for the next decade. Most of the security measures have been phased in in time for Thursday's opening of a meeting of the Central Committee, the roughly 370-member body that is finalizing preparations for the congress.
China always tightens security for high-profile events, like much of the rest of the world. London, for instance, restricted air traffic during the Olympics.
But many of Beijing's rules seem extraordinary, perhaps in an effort to smooth a once-a-decade transition that has already been bumpy.
Bo Xilai, once a candidate for the all-powerful Politburo's Standing Committee, suffered a spectacular fall from grace in which his wife was convicted of murder. One of President Hu Jintao's closest aides was demoted, apparently after his son was killed alongside two partially dressed women in an accident in his Ferrari. Meanwhile, protests over pollution, land seizures and local corruption continue across the country.
Human rights groups report that activists and petitioners are being rounded up ahead of the congress. But the broader security measures may best illustrate how China is trying to leave absolutely no room for disruptions.
The government has blocked searches for the phrase "18th Party Congress" on websites including China's popular Twitter-like Sina Weibo. Internet posters manage to get around that by using characters that sound like "party congress." One substitute: "Sparta."
Taxi drivers have been told to remove window handles, to avoid sensitive parts of the city and not to open their windows or doors if they pass "important venues." Some taxi drivers, but not all, have been told to ask passengers to sign a "traveling agreement" if they want to go near Tiananmen Square.
A man who answered the phone at Wan Quan Si taxi company in the south of the capital said the rule applies to all taxi companies in Beijing. He declined to give his name.
Beijing investment company worker Li Tianshu said she didn't believe colleagues' claims that door handles had been removed until she got into a taxi herself the other day.
"There were no handles for three of the four windows," she said. "The driver told me that their company asked them to do it to prevent passengers spreading leaflets. The driver complained that if they don't take the handles away or the passengers throw leaflets out of the taxis, they will be fired."
Citizens have taken to Weibo to post photos of doors with handles crudely ripped off. Liu Shi, a client manager in a mass communication company, wrote that the taxi driver had told him that power to electronic window buttons would also be cut.
A memo circulating on Weibo warned taxi drivers to be on guard against passengers who may want to cast balloons with slogans or throw "pingpong balls with reactionary words." It was unclear who issued the memo and its authenticity could not be confirmed.
A man who wouldn't give his name at Tong Hai taxi company in central Beijing said it had received orders "from higher authorities" to reinforce security measures and a memo, but he wouldn't elaborate.
Police in the capital are asking that Chinese show their ID cards and foreigners their passports when buying remote-controlled model aircraft over safety concerns, the official Global Times newspaper reported Tuesday.
One toy store owner said authorities had told him to stop selling medium and large-sized planes.
"This kind of plane can't fly over long distances and it can hardly carry anything," said Chen Ziping, holding up a model about half a meter (half a yard) long. "They just told me to stop selling it and I have to follow the order."
The Global Times quoted an unnamed police officer from Aoyuncun station in Chaoyang district as saying that people wanting to buy model planes during the congress should go to the vendor's local police station to register. When the buyer receives approval from the station's police chief, he can make the purchase, the officer said.
Still, they won't be allowed to fly model planes in the city, and balloons also are on the blacklist, the newspaper said. It cited another officer from Chaoyang district Public Security Bureau as saying that pigeon owners must keep their birds in their coops during the congress.
Chen Jieren had a run-in with the security rules Sunday after the handle of his knife broke while he was cooking dinner. He took his ID card to the supermarket, knowing that people must show identification when buying knives during sensitive periods.
"Well, it didn't work this time," Chen said in a telephone interview. "I was told by the police that no more knives can be sold, not even pencil sharpeners. And I don't think the shopkeeper was kidding, because several days ago I saw myself that police were asking the sales assistants in the stationer's not to sell pencil sharpeners.
"I went back and got an old knife and tried to sharpen it. I guess I have to live with it until the Congress finishes," he added, glumly.
Wang Ye, an engineer from Beijing who lives in Shanghai, was planning on returning to his home city to run a marathon, but it was postponed with no word on when it might be held. The date of a marathon in the eastern city of Hangzhou, near Shanghai, was also changed.
"There is no official explanation, but we all know that it is due to the 18th Congress," he said. "(The Beijing marathon) has been held regularly for the past 31 years.
"I guess I will give up running competitions in China and try to attend more abroad," said Wang. "At least they tell me the schedule one year before the event."

Bed Basics ? Your Action Plan
Back
Pros: Many doctors agree that back is best. Snoozing in savasana pose is a boon for spine and neck health, because the back is straight and not forced into any contortions. And back sleeping is great because it helps the mattress do its job of supporting the spine. In a perfect (and kind of uncomfy) world, everyone would sleep on their backs without a pillow, as this position leaves the neck in a neutral position. Using too many pillows can also make breathing more difficult.
Back sleeping is also a winner for the more cosmetically inclined. Spending all night with the face out in the air ? and not smooshed up against a pillow ? leads to fewer facial wrinkles[]. Ladies can expect perkier breasts after sleeping in this position, too, because support from the torso ensures that nothing is, erm, sagging.
Cons: Instances of snoring and sleep apnea are much more frequent when a person is sleeping in the supine position. In fact, back sleeping is so closely linked to sleep apnea that doctors prescribe side sleeping as a treatment for the condition[]. That?s possibly because when we sleep on our backs, gravity forces the base of the tongue to collapse into the airway, which obstructs breathing and also creates oh-so-pleasant snoring noises that keeps the neighbors up at night.
It?s also worth noting a supported spine doesn?t always necessarily mean a good night?s sleep. A study comparing the sleep habits of good sleepers and poor sleepers noted?the people with worse-quality sleep spent more time on their backs than the good sleepers?((Sleep positions in the young adult and their relationship with the subjective quality of sleep. De Koninck J, Gagnon P, Lallier S. Sleep. 1983;6(1):52-9.)).
Side
Pros: Side sleepers, unite! Whether they?re curling up in the cozy fetal position or lying straight on one side, the vast majority of people report sleeping on their sides (although everyone is unconscious during sleep, this information can never be entirely accurate). Doctors encourage sleeping on the left side during pregnancy because it improves circulation to the heart, which benefits both mom and baby. Side sleeping is also a pregnancy winner because sleeping on the back puts pressure on the lower back (which can lead to fainting)?and stomach-sleeping is impossible for obvious reasons[]. For those not expecting, sleeping on the left side can also ease heartburn and acid reflux, making it easier for people with these conditions to fall asleep.
Cons: Here?s the bad news ? sleeping on the left side can put pressure on the liver, stomach, and lungs (alternating sides often can help prevent organ strain). And as almost all side-sleepers know well, this position can result in the dreaded squished-arm-numbness. Snuggling into bed with the arm behind the head is a common sleep position, but it may adversely affect muscles and nerves. Resting the head (or the whole body) on a single arm can restrict blood flow and press down on the nerves, which results in ?rubber arm? or painful pins and needles. In this position, the shoulder supports a lot of the body?s weight, which can constrict the neck and shoulder muscles[].
Stomach
Pros: Stomach sleeping eases snoring and some cases of sleep apnea, but that?s pretty much the only good thing about going belly-down at night.
Cons: Resting on the tummy is widely regarded as the worst sleeping position. It flattens the natural curve of the spine, which can lead to lower back pain. Sleeping all night with the head turned to one side also strains the neck. If this is the preferred position, try using pillows to gradually train the body to sleep on one side. Lower back twinges? Try sticking a pillow under the hips and lower abdomen to give the bottom of the spine a boost.
The Takeaway
Regardless of health benefits, people sleep in the position they find most comfy. Experimenting with different sleep positions won?t do any harm, so feel free to try each position for a few nights and see which is the best fit. Whether it?s back, side, or stomach, people tend to wake up in the position that their bodies naturally snooze in. Unless a doctor specifically recommends switching, it?s probably best to keep doing what feels right.

Sandy helps push gasoline prices lower

Gasoline prices are likely to keep falling after Super Storm Sandy shut down highways and air travel across the East Coast.
?We?re not going to see prices move higher because of this storm. We?re going to see prices move lower,? said Tom Kloza, oil analyst at OPIS. RBOB gasoline futures were down a half percent, at $2.62 per gallon in afternoon trading Tuesday.
?Gasoline at the pump continued to decline, with the national average for unleaded regular $3.53, a penny lower than Monday and 11 cents cheaper than a week ago.
?Kloza and others said gasoline could move higher in the short term but the dynamic favors lower prices.
??My guess is we?ll have 20 to 25 states that will have prices below where they were a year ago,? he said. ?It could be in the $3.40s (a gallon) by next week. There?s a huge swatch of the country that?s going to be get closer to $3.??
Five East Coast refineries producing gasoline were all in the path of Sandy. The Linden, N.J.-based Philips 66 refinery, one of the nation's largest, remained closed Tuesday after it was shut pre-emptively ahead of Monday?s storm. The plant did see some flooding, and it was awaiting a return of power in the next day or two. But several other refineries, which had been operating at reduced levels, were restoring operations.

The refineries produce about 6.5 percent of the U.S. gasoline. Another refinery, owned by Hess, was also shut down in New Jersey, but it does not make gasoline. The Colonial pipeline, which transports gasoline to the East Coast, said it did not have flooding or operational issues at its Linden tank farm but it was waiting for power to be restored.
?The destructive storm came ashore in South Jersey on Monday, flooding shore communities, before turning northward to flood lower Manhattan, coastal New York and Long Island, and then into New England. The massive storm, which merged with another storm, impacted Maryland, Delaware and stretched into the Midwest.
?Traffic in the mid-Atlantic was halted during Monday?s storm and sharply reduced Tuesday, as cleanup and power crews worked to clear debris and restore electricity, knocked out by the dangerous storm system. Many schools and businesses were closed or operating with reduced staff, and trading activity in the stock market and bond market remained shut down Tuesday.
Stephen Schork, The Schork Report, talks about the status of gasoline production and Sandy's impact on prices at the pump. It looks like refineries in the system were mostly unscathed, he says.
?Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, estimates that the gasoline production losses due to Sandy would amount to about 1.5 million to 1.7 million barrels , but the demand is expected to have dropped by 2 million barrels. The cancellation of thousands of airline flights also could create a backup in jet fuel. The drop in demand in refined products also takes pressure off of crude, which has been falling.
?West Texas Intermediate was flat Tuesday, up just 12 cents at $85.67 per barrel.
??This is a demand destruction event, and if you really think about it, you have an Election Day coming up. We?re not talking about a weekend that would have seen much demand. Until you get to Thanksgiving, you have one of the softest demand seasons for gasoline,? Kloza said. ?I think WTI is probably fairly valued right now. We?re seeing a lot of weak prices that don?t trade in the futures market.?
?He said heavy Canadian crude was less than $60 a barrel recently, while Bakken crude from North Dakota was $10 a barrel cheaper than WTI. Kloza said that is cheaper because of rail snags due to the storm.
