Will Wendy run for governor?

Will Wendy run?

That's the question many Texas Democrats ? and Republicans ? are asking after Wendy Davis, the 50-year-old state senator turned anti-abortion-bill-filibustering-star, said this week that she's raised nearly $1 million since her 12-hour stand June 25.

?Somebody has to step up,? Davis said in a May interview published by Texas Monthly this week. ?As long as the Democrats continue to buy into the same bull? that some of the Republicans are saying ? ?Oh no, it?s Texas, it?s hopeless? ? and continue to act like it won?t happen for six, eight, twelve, sixteen years from now, that perpetuates the problem.?

Since her filibuster of the Republican bill, Democrats have been urging her to throw her now-famous pink running shoes (the one's she wore on the floor of the Texas Capitol) into the 2014 race to fill outgoing Gov. Rick Perry's seat. Perry, who announced last week he will not seek re-election, slammed Davis' display.

?It is just unfortunate that she hasn?t learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters," Perry said a day after the filibuster.

A Democrat has not won statewide office in Texas since 1994.

Davis has downplayed the gubernatorial talk, saying she's focused on re-election to the state Senate in her district. But she sounds like she's digging in for a bigger fight ? and a bigger stage.

"I always stand out by the voting lines on Election Day," Davis told Texas Monthly two days after her filibuster. "And I can?t tell you how many people say, ?I?ve never voted for a Democrat in my life, but I?m splitting my ticket for you.? They?re more engaged and thoughtful than we give them credit for. And when I see the pandering by Governor Perry and Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst, it literally makes me sick to my stomach. Because it demonstrates that they believe voters are stupid.?

In an op-ed published Monday in the Washington Post, Davis wrote:

The filibuster was more than organized opposition or even endurance ? it was an expression of mainstream Texans standing up against partisan power-mongers who no longer act in Texas? best interest or even tell Texans the truth.

... The filibuster was a means to continue the fight and stand up to Republican leaders. That fight is not a new one for me. As a senator from the only true swing district in the Texas Senate, I?ve been targeted by the GOP for my outspoken criticism of their extremist attacks on public education and voting rights, to name just two examples. My nearly 13-hour stand against the effort to deny women access to basic health care evolved into a people?s filibuster opposing a selfish and out-of-touch leadership that refuses to listen to real families with real hopes.

Texas really is the greatest state in the greatest nation. Texans ? and women all over the country ? deserve leaders that care, that listen and that work to protect their interests. The people?s filibuster demonstrated that Texans ? and women everywhere ? are ready and willing to fight back.

?She has revived a moribund party, given Democrats a sense of enthusiasm and optimism," Rice University political scientist Mark P. Jones told Time magazine earlier this month. "But whether that can be transformed to success at the polls is another question.?

(AP) ? Rory McIlroy has shrugged off a suggestion from Nick Faldo to spend more time concentrating on golf, saying the six-time major champion "should know how hard this game is at times."

McIlroy won his second major title last summer with a runaway win at the PGA Championship, but he's struggled with his game this season after changing equipment. Some have also speculated that he's devoted too much time to off-the-course activities, cutting into his preparation time and mental sharpness.

Among those was Faldo. Earlier this week, Sir Nick urged McIlroy to spend the next two decades focused solely on his golf, calling it his "window of opportunity," before savoring the fruits of his labor.

McIlroy said Wednesday that Faldo should "know how much work we all put into it."

Microsoft slashes Surface RT price by $150

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Microsoft is slashing the price of its Surface RT tablet by $150 as it fights to increase its tiny share of the booming tablet market.

The cut brings the price of the Surface RT with 32 gigabytes of memory to $349 without a cover, which also acts as a keyboard. Including a cover with a touch-sensitive keyboard, the device comes to $449. The Surface has a 10.1-inch screen measured diagonally.

According to market research firm IDC, Microsoft shipped about 900,000 tablets in the first quarter of 2013. That includes both the slimmed-down RT version and the Pro version of Surface, which is compatible with regular Windows programs.

That gives Microsoft a slim 1.8 percent share of the global tablet market. Apple is the leader with 39.6 percent.

Hanover coach Garth Nelson leaves legacy with his passing

For the past 32 years, there had been one constant on the soccer fields at Hanover High School.

The constant ? girls coach Garth Nelson, who started the girls team at the school 32 years ago and was the only head coach at the school until Coach Nelson passed away last week at the age of 65.

He left a legacy of success, both on and off the field, compiling more than 300 victories, a couple of State Championships, six second-place finishes and 24 straight playoff appearances.

There were League titles and numerous players followed high school careers with scholarships and a love of the sport for life.

As a writer, I had a good fortune of covering the girls team and talking to Coach Nelson about his team.

Coach Nelson was always happy to talk, and was the first to deflect the praise to his players, even after he won his 300th career game Oct. 25, 2010.

?It took 30 years and a lot of patience,? Nelson said after a short ceremony where he presented his players with special 300 pins in honor of the achievement, and the fact that the win was the program?s 300th, not just his. ?I love the game. I love to coach. Before the girls started I was the JV coach for the boys. A lot of things have happened in 30 years. We have four sectional championships, three Eastern Mass. championships , two state titles and three appearances in the state championship game and 12 League Championships.?

To make the day more special was the fact that it happened on Senior Day.

?We have 10 seniors and we started them all,? he said. ?They all played the whole game. This is a talented class. We have a nice combination.?

That same day, he explained what kept the retired chemistry teacher coming back for soccer year after year.

?There?s no question about it. I enjoy this,? he said after No. 300. ?This is one of the great pleasures of my life. It?s different from the academic environment. It is great to be involved in a non-academic way, where life lessons are learned. This is an excellent group of kids. It?s one of my most enjoyable teams. They?re great to work with on a daily basis. They work hard for each other and care for each other.?

Coach Nelson also cared for his players.

He respected them as people, and every time I was there, accentuated the positive, even after losses.

I can?t remember a negative word from him.

I also remember a gentleman who always made it a point to look my daughters in the eye and say hello whenever they joined me at a game. He always wanted to know how they were doing, and my kids always said how nice he was when we?d be walking back to the parking lot.

That to me said a lot.

The fact that when he hit a milestone like win No. 300, he gave gifts to his players also said a lot.

Coach Nelson was the epitome of class.

As a coach, the championships and playoff appearances were an indicator of his coaching skill and knowledge of the game.

There were times where he would talk about experimenting with moving players into new positions, and it just about always worked, and many times, the players worked so well in the new spots that they stuck with them after high school or with their club teams.

A couple of years ago, Hanover was in a bit of a rebuilding mode, and made the playoffs through the Sullivan Rule, allowing them to join the tournament on the strength of their record against teams in their own division.

That season, Hanover had only played a few games against Div. 3 teams, and were successful. The rest of the games were against upper division teams, including some very tough opponents.

Hanover went into the Div. 3 South Sectionals with a No. 19 seed.

When the tournament ended for Hanover, they had a winning record and made it all the way to the Sectional semifinal, where they were edged 2-1 in penalty kicks by eventual champion Dover-Sherborn.

?It was a very good game,? Nelson said in typical fashion. ?I?m very proud of them. They?re a great crew. They like each other and play hard for each other. I feel for my ten seniors. When you go down in the tournament you go down with a thud, but this team could just have easily been celebrating victory.

??I give the Dover-Sherborn girls credit. They fought to come back.?

Coach Nelson, along with his long-time associate coach Dave Newbitt, was a fan of the game as well.

There were a few times I ran into him while covering games from other teams in my zone, and he would be there to enjoy a game. He was also a big fan of having the high school kids work with younger kids in the Youth Program. It was a regular event that was enjoyed by many.

To his family, friends, players and the town of Hanover, my thoughts are with you.

I personally will honor Coach Nelson by remembering his legacy and all the positive energy that left Hanover a better place for his being there.

Paddy Power to Launch Real Money Sports Betting on Facebook

Irish gaming firm Paddy Power announced last week that it will soon launch the first real money sports betting app on the Facebook social networking platform. The app, called Paddy Power In-Play!, is currently in beta testing and may launch in said beta format within the next week or two.

?The app will add social engagement to online betting, enabling customers to bet on a wide variety of sporting events through Facebook, while also giving them visibility of, and the opportunity to engage with, other users,? said Paddy Power in a statement.

The company has made assurances that strict age verification procedures will be in place. The app will initially be available only to desktop users in the United Kingdom.

Lynsey Sweales, CEO of social media and online marketing firm Social B, told CNBC that if Paddy Power really taps into the power of social networking, this new venture could be a hit for the company. ?Gambling companies can?t just go out and see what people are talking about then say ?bet with us?, but they can increase brand awareness and possibly increase sales,? she said. ?There are strict legal guidelines with gambling, but a company can see what people are talking about and can tap that space.?

Paddy Power?s announcement came at about the same time that social gaming power Zynga unveiled its own real-money gambling apps for Facebook. Last week, Zynga demonstrated two apps ? ZyngaPlusPoker and ZyngaPlusCasino ? both of which run using software from bwin.party. Both products launched as separate, downloadable offerings in April, marking Zynga?s first foray into real money gaming. No launch date has been named for the Facebook launch.

Assuming Paddy Power In-Play! goes live soon, it will be the second real money gambling app on Facebook. Last August, London-based Gamesys launched Bingo Friendzy, a real money bingo application.

Peter O?Donovan, managing director of Paddy Power Online, said of the upcoming release, ?The launch of the first real money sports betting product on Facebook is testament to Paddy Power?s e-commerce and technology capabilities as well as our international industry leadership position in social media.?

Paddy Power is best known for its online sports book, but it also operates an entire suite of gambling products. Its internet poker room, PaddyPowerPoker.com, resides on the iPoker Network, currently ranked by PokerScout.com as the third largest network in the industry in terms of cash game traffic. At this time, there is no indication that Paddy Power has plans to develop a poker app for Facebook, though if Paddy Power In-Play! succeeds and real money gambling continues to expand on Facebook, it would not be at all surprising to see more real money online poker popup in the social gaming realm.
